Opportunity to combine research insect ecology with teaching in biology.

 

Job Description
The candidate will carry out  50% research 50 % undergraduate teaching duties. The research will be on the evolution of habitat and dietary specialization in aphid-eating ladybird beetles. The work will be split between the field and laboratory in Maastricht. Work will include relating ladybird specialization to population characteristics of their prey and to physiological characteristics measured in the laboratory. Teaching will be primarily in the areas of biology, including ecology, evolutionary biology and molecular biology, with a focus on teaching approaches using problem-based learning and research-based learning. 

You will work within the Maastricht Science Programme in a team headed by Dr John Sloggett. The team will include one postdoctoral researcher and a number of undergraduate researchers who are carrying out research as a part of their degree.

A summary of your tasks is:

• To carry out field and laboratory research on ladybird beetle specialization.
• To assist in the care for insect cultures (ladybirds and aphids).
• To write and publish papers on your research.
• To take problem based learning tutorials in predominantly biological subjects.
• To assist in practical classes.
• To assist or take the lead in undergraduate practical work, including undergraduate research. 

 

Requirements
You will have a masters in a biological subject preferably including insect behaviour, population ecology and physiology. You will be flexible and passionate about both academic university-level research and teaching tasks. In your work you will be careful and industrious, with an enthusiasm for imparting information and guiding others. Skills required are:

• A knowledge of approaches to working with insects in the field and laboratory.
• Knowledge of the statistical handing of such data.
• An enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching with experience preferred with problem- and research-based learning.
• An interest in communication within and beyond the scientific realm.

The position is graded according to UFO profile PhD, with corresponding salary from €2901,00 in the first year and €3707,00 gross per month in the fourth year (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1.0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 3 years will follow.

Our department has more than 30 years’ experience with research and teaching in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, and Applied Mathematics. To strengthen our education, we are looking for a lecturer with a (PhD) degree in the field of Computer Science. 
 

What are you going to do 

Currently we offer two bachelor’s programmes (Computer Science and Data Science & Artificial Intelligence) and two master’s programmes (Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Decision Making). 

 

Our programmes employ the so-called Project-Centred Learning (PCL) educational model. With PCL, students work on two big projects per year alongside their courses. In groups of 6 students, they tackle projects ranging from developing a real-time human-computer interface using parallax, to designing optimal timetables, and automating human facial expression recognition. Apart from creating a functional product, our students write a report suitable for publication in an academic journal and present their findings to their peers and teachers. 

 

As a lecturer, you…  
…will spend 100% of your time on education (or education related tasks), mainly in our Bachelor’s Computer Science (see curriculum here). This includes teaching some of the courses offered by our department, supervising student projects at the bachelor level, coordinating thesis projects at master level, and developing education. 

 

Requirements 
Naturally, we are looking for a passionate lecturer. But we also seek someone who enjoys mentoring, and who thrives in our informal and international teaching culture. The Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN) at Maastricht University seeks to appoint a Full Professor of Methodology and Statistics to lead the department and strengthen its research, education, and consultancy missions.

 

 

Job description
We are looking for a 1.0 fte full professor (chair), as a replacement, who will lead the Department of Methodology & Statistics of FPN in education, research, and consultancy, including managing its personnel and budget. Specifically, the professor will dedicate 0.4 fte to teaching, 0.2 fte to departmental management (e.g., creating a faculty-wide platform of expertise exchange), and 0.4 fte to research (including consultations and contributions to collaborative research projects).

 

Your responsibilities
The role encompasses:

• Managing personnel and finances within the department of Methodology & Statistics.
• Initiating and supervising research in statistical methodologies relevant to psychology and neuroscience. 
• Writing (and contributing to) research grants to fund e.g., PhD projects and supervising doctoral students.
• Supervising and participating in FPN teaching at both bachelor’s and master levels, with a focus on advancing research and statistical literacy in a problem-based learning environment. 
• Providing statistical consultancy to FPN researchers, including opportunities for co-authorship and co-promotorship.
• Participating in committees for grant reviews, journal editorial boards, and providing statistical guidance to local and national bodies if required.
• Promoting open science, reproducibility, and innovative methods to enhance FPN’s research quality and educational impact.

 

Your profile
We are looking for a candidate with: 

• An MSc and PhD in statistics or a related field (e.g., psychometrics, mathematical psychology).
• A strong publication record in statistical research relevant to psychology.
• Significant experience in teaching statistics at the university level with positive evaluations.
• A vision for the future of statistics education, particularly in the context of problem-based learning.
• A proven track record in statistical consultancy and collaborative research.
• Experience supervising PhD students as (co-)promoter.
• Leadership skills and experience in managing personnel and budgets.
• Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., R, Python).
• A collaborative mindset, demonstrated by co-publications and joint projects with statisticians and psychologists.
• Coaching leadership, networking, and coaching abilities to bring together academics within and beyond the faculty to build a diverse, cooperative community of Methodology & Statistics (M&S) experts.

Wat ga je doen?
Als projectleider speel je een sleutelrol in het realiseren van twee complexe strategische projecten: de gebiedsontwikkeling van het Romeins Museum en de gebiedsontwikkeling Royal/Rivoli binnen het in ontwikkeling zijnde dynamisch ecosysteem binnen de audiovisuele sector.

I: Gebiedsontwikkeling Het Romeins Museum

1. Nieuwbouw Het Romeins Museum

Doel:
Het coördineren en overzien van de volledige nieuwbouw met hieraan gerelateerde zaken van Het Romeins Museum. Hiermee wordt een historisch en cultureel significant gebied in Heerlen gerevitaliseerd.

Activiteiten:- Samenwerken met aannemer, architecten, stedenbouwkundigen, historici, en lokale overheden - Plannen en leiden van de uitvoeringsfase; - Waarborgen van de naleving van alle regelgeving en kwaliteitsnormen. Het realiseren van het project vanaf de realisatiefase t/m de nazorgfase. Zorgen dat het project binnen budget en tijd en met kwaliteit wordt gerealiseerd.

2. Herinrichting Openbare Ruimte rondom Thermen Museum

Doel:Het creëren van een museumplein en het integreren van de omliggende openbare ruimte met het nieuw te bouwen Romeins Museum tot een samenhangend geheel.

Activiteiten:- Onderhandelen met vastgoedeigenaren - Leiden van de herinrichtingswerkzaamheden - Coördineren met stadsplanners en aannemers - Zorgen voor een esthetische en functionele verbetering van het gebied.

II: Gebiedsontwikkeling Royal-Rivoli

1. Nieuwbouw en restauratie van het Royal-Rivoli complex

Doel:
Het coördineren en overzien van de volledige ontwerp en nieuwbouwfase. Hiermee wordt een historisch en cultureel significant complex in Heerlen gerevitaliseerd en gaat dit het hart vormen van het AV-ecosysteem.

Activiteiten:

• Samenwerken met architecten, stedenbouwkundigen, filmliefhebbers (gebruikers van de gebouwen)i en lokale overheden - Plannen en leiden van de ontwerp- en uitvoeringsfase; - Waarborgen van de naleving van alle regelgeving en kwaliteitsnormen. Leiding geven aan het aanbestedingsproces voor de realisatiefase.

2. Herinrichting Openbare Ruimte rondom Royal-Rivoli/Stationsplein

Doel:
Het creëren van een plein en het integreren van de omliggende openbare ruimte waarmee de samenhang binnen het AV-ecosysteem versterkt wordt.

Activiteiten:- Onderhandelen met vastgoedeigenaren - Leiden van de herinrichtingswerkzaamheden - Coördineren met stadsplanners en aannemers - Zorgen voor een esthetische en functionele verbetering van het gebied.

3. Het realiseren van een fietsenstalling op maaiveld Parallelweg 2a in samenwerking met NS en Prorail. De bovengelegen verdiepingen geschikt maken voor verhuur aan bedrijven en instellingen op het gebied van audio-visuele media

Doel:
Het creëren van een AV media hub gecombineerd met een openbare fietsenstalling voor circa 800 fietsen.

Activiteiten:

• Onderhandelen met NS en Prorail - Leiden van de bouw- en renovatiewerkzaamheden - Coördineren met team vastgoed, cluster cultuur en aannemers - Zorgen voor een esthetische en functionele verbetering van het gebouw.

4. Het begeleiden vanuit gemeentezijde van een woningbouwinitiatief van een woontoren van 70 meter met 100 woningen direct grenzend aan het Royal-Rivolicomplex

Doel:
Het behartigen van de gemeentelijke kaders ten aanzien van de planontwikkeling van een woningbouwcorporatie.

Activiteiten:

• Onderhandelen met vastgoedeigenaren – Komen tot een intentie- en anterieure overeenkomst – Sturing geven aan de ontwerpsessies - Coördineren met stadsplanners - Zorgen voor een esthetische en functionele samenhang met het Royal-Rivoli complex – Coördineren van het traject om te komen tot een BOPA binnen de omgevingsvergunning.

Jij pakt in de voorgaande projecten de leiding en zorgt dat alles van begin tot eind soepel verloopt:

• Je begeleidt je eigen strategische projecten, vanaf de eerste voorbereidingen tot aan de uitvoering en de evaluatie.
• Je bent inhoudelijk en procesmatig verantwoordelijk voor de projecten, en leidt ze met een helder doel voor ogen.
• Je bent het aanspreekpunt voor zowel interne als externe partners en draagt zorg voor het resultaat, waarbij je hen goed op de hoogte houdt.
• Je hebt een scherp oog voor risico’s en neemt maatregelen om alles op koers te houden.
• Je onderhoudt een relevant netwerk en creëert draagvlak voor jouw projecten bij belanghebbenden.
• Je adviseert het bestuur, de opdrachtgever, de programmamanager Centrum en directie en bent hun sparringpartner voor alles rond initiatieven en (deel)projecten.
• Je deelt je kennis graag en ondersteunt andere projectleiders om samen sterker te worden.

Je komt terecht in het leukste projectmanagementteam van Nederland en maakt onderdeel uit van het Programmateam Centrum! Met veel energie en een flinke dosis ambitie bouwen wij elke dag aan onze stad én onze organisatie. Ons team bestaat uit 26 enthousiaste collega’s, waaronder projectondersteuners en projectleiders, die op verschillende niveaus – van operationeel tot strategisch – hun expertise inzetten. We zijn een divers en betrokken team dat elkaar inspireert en altijd klaarstaat met humor, advies en daadkracht.

Onze projecten zijn uitdagend en veelzijdig, met een focus op maatschappelijke impact. Denk aan indrukwekkende projecten zoals brede maatschappelijke voorzieningen, opvang voor Oekraïense vluchtelingen en de vernieuwing van de wijk Slakhorst. Als projectleider krijg je de kans om een echte bijdrage te leveren aan deze initiatieven, terwijl je altijd op de steun van je collega’s kunt rekenen.

Werken voor de gemeente Heerlen is bouwen aan het Heerlen van Morgen

Wat krijg je daarvoor terug?
Bij de gemeente Heerlen bieden we jou een omgeving waar je de ruimte krijgt om jezelf en de organisatie te ontwikkelen. Wij bieden een interessante, tijdelijke functie voor de duur van 3 jaar voor 32 tot 36 uur per week.

De functie is ingeschaald in schaal 12 (HR21 normfunctie: Projectleider II) met een bruto maandsalaris van minimaal € 5.070,00 en maximaal € 6.862,00 (afhankelijk van opleiding en ervaring, bij een fulltime dienstverband). Het is mogelijk om meer uren te werken en extra vrije tijd op te bouwen (ADV).

Verder ontvang je een individueel keuze budget (IKB). Dit is 17.05% van jouw salaris. Daarnaast bieden wij mogelijkheden om opleidingen te volgen, flexibel te werken en hebben wij verschillende vitaliteitsregelingen, waaronder onze eigen sportstimuleringsregeling en een flexibel vitaliteitsbudget in de vorm van een digitale munt (Vitknip) die je in Heerlen op veel plekken kan inzetten om jouw vitaliteit te vergroten.
