Welcome to Maastricht University
At Maastricht University (UM), we believe science can—and should—make a difference. As a PhD candidate in our newly established MetaBolymer research group, you will be part of an ambitious effort to develop intelligent materials that interact directly with the immune system. By combining polymer chemistry, immunology, and tissue engineering, you will help shape the future of regenerative medicine. This is more than a PhD position—it’s a chance to co-build a lab, define a research focus, and grow with a team that values creativity, collaboration, and scientific integrity.
About the project
We are offering a fully funded, 4-year PhD position for a talented and motivated chemist with a strong interest in biomedical applications. The goal of this project is to create interactive biomaterials that influence immune responses at the molecular level.
You will focus on the design and synthesis of advanced polymeric systems that contain built-in biochemical and biophysical cues to direct immune cell behavior. These materials are more than structural scaffolds—they actively participate in healing by modulating metabolism and immune activity in a targeted way.
As part of the MetaBolymer group, you’ll work at the interface of materials science and bioengineering. The project combines fundamental chemistry with application-driven innovation, and you’ll collaborate closely with immunologists, cell biologists, and matrix engineers. While a background in immunology is not required, you should be open to learning and integrating biological concepts into your work.
Your research focus
As a PhD candidate, you will:
- Design and synthesize novel polymeric biomaterials with tunable physical properties such as stiffness, degradability, and surface topography.
- Develop chemical modification strategies to incorporate and present bioactive molecules within material matrices.
- Engineer materials that communicate with immune cells through metabolically active or inflammatory cues.
- Collaborate with immunology experts to study material–cell interactions in both in vitro and in vivo settings.
- Use advanced analytical tools (e.g. NMR, GPC, rheology, AFM, fluorescence microscopy) to establish structure–function relationships.
- Contribute to the scientific direction and culture of a young, fast-growing, interdisciplinary team.
Scientific background
The immune system is not just a defense mechanism—it also plays a central role in healing, regeneration, and biomaterial integration. In this project, we aim to develop bio-instructive materials that actively engage the immune system through molecular design.
By integrating biochemical signaling and material mechanics, we strive to build next-generation materials that help guide immune responses in a controlled, therapeutic manner. This research brings together principles from polymer chemistry, metabolic regulation, and cell–matrix communication, to unlock new ways of treating damaged tissues and improving the outcomes of medical interventions.
Our long-term vision is to design immune-responsive biomaterials that not only “fit in” biologically but also contribute actively to the healing process.
Who we’re looking for
You’re a curious, hands-on researcher with a drive to apply chemistry in meaningful, biomedical ways. Ideally, you:
- Hold a Master’s degree (MSc or equivalent) in Polymer Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Have practical experience in polymer synthesis and material characterization (e.g. NMR, GPC, rheology, spectroscopy, or surface analysis).
- Are interested in applying chemistry to immunology, metabolism, or tissue regeneration—experience is not required, but openness to learn is.
- Enjoy working both independently and in a multidisciplinary team.
- Communicate clearly and effectively in English, both in writing and speaking.
- Are motivated to contribute to a collaborative, inclusive, and high-quality lab environment.
- Knowledge of Dutch is not required.

Welcome to Maastricht University!
At Maastricht University, we push boundaries in research and education – and we do it together. In our growing interdisciplinary research team, you'll be at the heart of innovation in biomaterials and dynamic covalent chemistry. Join us as a PhD candidate and help shape the future of responsive, biofunctional materials for next-generation biomedical applications.
About the project
We are offering a fully funded, 4-year PhD position for a talented and motivated organic/polymer chemist to join our young and collaborative lab. As we shape our scientific direction and lab culture, you’ll have the opportunity to help build something meaningful from the ground up.
This project aims to design multi-responsive, dynamic biomaterials by integrating polymer synthesis, dynamic covalent chemistry, and bio-click reactions. The goal is to create topologically adaptable hydrogel networks that respond to external stimuli (e.g. pH, redox, temperature) and enable controlled drug release for use in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
A particular focus will be the development of extracellular matrix (ECM)-like environments that support the growth and function of organoids and engineered tissues.
Scientific goals
You will work on:
- Developing synthetic strategies using template-directed synthesis to spatially organize reactive moieties in polymer networks.
- Exploring topology transformation and network rearrangement to achieve responsive material behavior.
- Tuning drug release kinetics through covalent and supramolecular mechanisms.
- Establishing structure–property relationships using advanced analytical tools.
- Applying your work to real-world biomedical challenges.
Scientific background
Dynamic covalent systems offer a unique route to reversible and adaptable materials. Inspired by nature—where dynamic covalent interactions govern the structure and function of biomolecules, and templated reactions are part of everyday molecular life—we aim to harness similar principles for material design.
By combining template effects with controlled spatial proximity of reactants, this project seeks to enhance reactivity and selectivity in covalent bond formation. Through this approach, we will explore how molecular design and processing conditions guide the assembly and adaptability of polymer networks, ultimately leading to biofunctional materials that reflect the complexity and responsiveness of living tissues.

Are you interested in joining an interdisciplinary team to study transnational mobilities and wellbeing in Asia? Passionate about ethnographic research? Self-motivated and ready to learn new research skills?
Job description:
The Department of Society Studies is looking for two postdoctoral researchers to undertake in-depth ethnographic research on transnational encounters and inequalities in the wellness industry in Southeast Asia. You will be part of a new European Research Council-funded project entitled ‘WELL-ASIA: The Pursuit of Wellness in Southeast Asia: New Encounters and Inequalities in an Emerging Industry’. You will be part of a team conducting fieldwork on the transnational encounters and inequalities in the wellness industry in Singapore, Ubud, and Chiang Mai.
Specifically, we are looking for:
- 1 postdoctoral researcher to carry out ethnographic fieldwork in Chiang Mai, Thailand; and
- 1 postdoctoral researcher to carry out ethnographic fieldwork in Ubud/Bali, Indonesia.
WELL-ASIA investigates the expanding and lucrative wellness industry in Southeast Asia, and the transnational mobilities and inequalities associated with it. The region has long been a crossroads of multiple healing traditions and practices. These practices are being increasingly commercialized in a global post-pandemic context as people around the world seek experiences to improve their physical and emotional wellbeing through practices such as yoga, meditation, spa and detoxifying therapies, and sound healing. WELL-ASIA adopts a multi-dimensional focus on the uneven interactions between those who labour in the industry (local and migrant workers in wellness and hospitality establishments, as well as wellness entrepreneurs); those who seek and consume wellness experiences (including tourists and ‘lifestyle migrants’); and the local communities involved (e.g. gig workers, café owners, land developers, tour guides, religious communities, neighbourhood and environmental associations).
Each postdoctoral researcher will examine these encounters and interactions in Chiang Mai (Northern Thailand) and Ubud (Bali, Indonesia), respectively. In addition to the two postdocs, the project team consists of the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Megha Amrith and a PhD researcher (both focusing on Singapore), a project manager, and research assistants. The team will jointly address the project’s larger conceptual questions through reading groups, workshops, and collaborative writing projects.
The tasks include:
- Developing a fieldwork plan, taking into consideration ethics and data management procedures of the Faculty.
- Ethnographic fieldwork (including interviews and participant observation) in Chiang Mai or Ubud over a period of nine months.
- Archival research on healing labour and analysis of visual materials representing the wellness industry.
- (Co)authoring publications and co-editing collaborative publications (e.g. peer-reviewed journal articles, journal special issues, book chapters).
- Participating in group meetings and contributing to the organization of events and workshops.
- Collaborating with a filmmaker on a documentary film (together with the project team) and working with visual and digital methods.
- Presenting work-in-progress at international workshops, conference panels and to colleagues within the Faculty.
Requirements
We are looking for someone who is excited and motivated to undertake postdoctoral research in a team environment for a period of up to 36 months. The position requires residence in Maastricht or the surrounding region (except for the fieldwork periods). Specifically, we are looking for someone who has:
- A completed PhD degree in Anthropology, Geography, Sociology or related interdisciplinary fields around transnational mobilities, development or Southeast Asian studies.
- Demonstrable experience with and passion for qualitative research methods, particularly ethnographic fieldwork.
- Strong analytical and writing skills.
- Advanced English language competency (speaking and writing for academic contexts).
- Excellent organizational skills and motivation to meet project milestones/deadlines.
- Enthusiasm to contribute to a collaborative team environment and to shared goals.
- Experience and/or interest in learning and working with visual, creative, and multimodal methods.
- (desirable, not required) Working knowledge of relevant regional language for fieldwork in Chiang Mai or Bali.
