The Maastricht Experimental Research In and through the Arts Network (MERIAN) – a collaborative programme initiated by Maastricht University (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University College Maastricht), Zuyd University of Applied Sciences (research centre What Art Knows) and the Jan van Eyck Academie – invites artists and academics to engage in collaborative research in between making and thinking. As a MERIAN PhD candidate you mobilize the powers and fragilities of artistic and scientific practices to engage in research that is problem-based and methodologically innovative, and which focuses on interdisciplinary topics that can fruitfully be explored across the arts and academia.

Job Description
For this position, MERIAN welcomes artistic research project proposals that critically examine the complex relationships between (de)coloniality, environmental justice, ecological regeneration. We are looking for research that unpacks the impact of colonial legacies on ecological challenges, amplifies marginalised perspectives, and reimagines sustainable relationships between human and more than human worlds.

The proposed research project should challenge dominant narratives and may deploy creative, speculative research practices, weaving together artistic and academic methodologies to address pressing global challenges. We are particularly interested in work that focuses on environmental and social injustices, generates innovative forms of knowledge and explores how creative practices can create transformative pathways to ecological regeneration and social justice, engaging deeply with the complex power dynamics that shape our understanding of ecology, colonialism and social interconnectedness.

Maastricht style of artistic research
The Maastricht style of artistic research is not equivalent to artists doing academic research, or vice versa. Instead, MERIAN believes the values of artistic research emerge from (and through) specific empirical and analytical practices. MERIAN starts from the premise that these artistic research practices necessarily involve exchanges between art and academia, between artists and scholars, between making and thinking. MERIAN embraces multiple differences and similarities. It encourages making border crossings and learning across boundaries as a fundamental part of its institutional arrangement. Instead of positioning artistic research within academia or claiming it principally for the arts, MERIAN is a collaboratory: a shared initiative through and through.

Distinctive in the Netherlands, MERIAN fundamentally does not belong primarily with one artistic or academic discipline but builds on heterogeneity. Artistic research conducted in the context of MERIAN thus goes beyond individual artistic practice or the disciplinary confines of academic research. It arises from – and is reflexive about – basic questions about how research is to be done, where, what for, and for whom. During your research, you will innovate your own research methodologies to fit the issues your research addresses and will relate critically to the local institutional and geographical context of your research. You may also do some teaching that is relevant to your artistic research practice within the educational programs of the MERIAN partners. In collaboration with your supervisors, you will devise your own educational program to support your research, drawing largely from existing courses on offer within the MERIAN partners.

MERIAN exists in and through the collaboration amongst its institutional partners. Responsibilities, facilities, costs, and outcomes are shared between the partnering institutions based on relevant expertise. The supervision of PhD candidates is also shared among the participating institutions and MERIAN works with a rotating system for its practical coordination.

The supervision team will be a collaboration between academic and artistic expertise from two of the MERIAN partners. From Maastricht University, you will be supervised by Dr. Christian Ernsten at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Maastricht Centre for Arts and Culture, Conservation and Heritage (MACCH). At the Jan van Eyck Academie you will be supervised by a member of the (visiting) staff. Additional external supervisors are possible.

Requirements
The application is open to practicing artists, designers and academics (from all disciplines), teachers and researchers at art schools, and talented graduates. The formal requirements are that you have a relevant master’s degree or a validated equivalent, and an active practice in the arts, design, or other creative domain. Your artistic or creative practice forms an integral part of your doctoral research. In addition, you are eager to engage in interdisciplinary research that is problem-based and methodologically innovative, and which focusses on topics that are artistically, academically, and societally relevant.

Artists and academics with a relevant (Research) Master degree. That is, artistic researchers with an affinity for exploratory and collaborative methods with a significant artistic research portfolio, showcasing both your academic and artistic expertise. Your artistic research practice should be related to one of the (inter)disciplines represented at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as well as the Jan van Eyck Academie.

From the applications, MERIAN will select one prospective candidate to be offered a funded pre-trajectory of three months spent as a resident at one of the MERIAN partners (1 fte). During this pre-trajectory, you will work together with your prospective supervisors and the MERIAN steering committee to finalize and embed your research proposal, as well as to seek additional funding for your project (if necessary).
 

What we offer
As PhD in Artistic Research at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

• Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale P according to UFO profile PhD, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €2901,00 and €3707,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
• An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 3 years will follow.

MERIAN is an institutional space for the development of new norms and forms of embodied knowledge, aiming to renegotiate relationships between existing cultural- and knowledge institutions to address urgent matters of societal concern.

Wie zoeken wij?

Je hebt een academische opleiding op financieel-economisch gebied en hebt ruime ervaring in verschillende beleidsdomeinen binnen de financiële sector. Het werken met diverse groepen mensen vraagt sterke leiderschapsvaardigheden. Je bent gewend te opereren in een breed en complex krachtenveld. Je kunt strategisch denken en beschikt over een goed ontwikkelde antenne om interne en externe ontwikkelingen en trends op te pakken en deze te vertalen naar operationele doelen. Je bent in staat om goed te communiceren en informatie helder over te brengen naar verschillende doelgroepen zowel college van bestuur, als directeuren, MT leden, klanten en medewerkers. Tot slot heb je een uitstekende schríftelijke en mondelinge beheersing van de Nederlandse en Engelse taal.

Wat biedt de UM?
Als Adjunct-Directeur bij Finance kom je in dienst bij de meest internationale universiteit van Nederland in het prachtige Maastricht. Verder bieden wij je:

• Goede arbeidsvoorwaarden. De functie is ingeschaald in schaal 14 met bijbehorende salarisinschaling op basis van ervaring tussen €6.603,- en €8.405,- bruto per maand (op basis van een fulltime dienstverband van 38 uur per week). In aanvulling op het maandsalaris zijn een 8,0% vakantie-uitkering en een 8,3% eindejaarsuitkering van toepassing.
• Een arbeidsovereenkomst voor een periode van 12 maanden met een omvang van 0.8-1.0 FTE. Bij gebleken geschiktheid zal de arbeidsovereenkomst omgezet worden in een dienstverband voor onbepaalde tijd.
• Bij de Universiteit Maastricht staat het welzijn van onze medewerkers hoog in het vaandel, zo hanteren we flexibele werktijden en de mogelijkheid om deels vanuit huis te werken indien de aard van je functie dit toelaat. Hiervoor ontvang je maandelijks een thuiswerk- en internetvergoeding. Finance 
Binnen Finance bij de Universiteit Maastricht vervullen circa 160 professionals dagelijks een belangrijke brugfunctie tussen de dagelijkse praktijk van een internationale, innovatieve en dynamische omgeving enerzijds en (financiële) wet- en regelgeving anderzijds. We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team in developing an organoid-based cell therapy for conjunctival disease. Our ultimate goal is to initiate a first-in-human clinical trial to establish proof-of-concept for this novel therapy.

Job description
Untreated ocular surface disease presents a significant threat to vision. For instance, pterygium, a common condition characterized by abnormal conjunctival growth, can extend over the cornea and impair vision. While conjunctival autografts are used to repair defects following pterygium removal, this approach has notable limitations. Recurring pterygium further complicates treatment, making autografts less successful or even unfeasible, leaving patients without effective therapeutic options.

In collaboration with Hans Clevers’ organoid lab, we have developed a promising alternative: a cell therapy that replaces conjunctival autografts. Using a robust in vitro protocol, we can culture autologous conjunctival organoids from small patient biopsies (Bannier-Hélaouët et al., Cell Stem Cell, 2024). We have also established a method for transplanting cell sheets and completed a preclinical in vivo study in a relevant animal model, demonstrating the efficacy of this approach in repairing conjunctival damage.

With support from Biotech Booster (www.biotechbooster.nl), we are now advancing toward GMP translation and a first-in-human clinical study.

The postdoctoral researcher will play a key role in this endeavour, with responsibilities both inside and outside the lab (approximately 40/60 split). Core tasks include supporting the GMP adaptation of the research-grade protocol, preparing regulatory documentation, designing the clinical study, analyzing data, and project management. In the lab, the researcher will perform experiments to characterize the conjunctival organoid grafts, enhance our understanding of cell identity, and identify new quality indicators. Additionally, approximately 5% of their time will be dedicated to tutoring, teaching, or supervising students.

Requirements

Candidates should possess a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., biomedical sciences, cell biology, etc.) or have equivalent experience demonstrating an affinity for this topic, even if their educational background is in a different field.

This is a milestone-driven project that is suited for a candidate passionate about conducting translational research. Scientific English for speaking, reading, and writing is required, and knowledge of Dutch is not necessary.

FHML, which is the largest faculty of Maastricht University, is formed by an (inter)national community of employees and students. We seek a PhD candidate to join our team developing innovative therapies for ophthalmic diseases and conditions. The overall aim of this project is to create a novel therapy to treat patients with severe myopia.

Job description

Myopia (near-sightedness) occurs when the eyeball is elongated from front to back. While many people experience a harmless form of myopia that can be easily corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery, there is a severe and progressive pathologic form known as “high myopia.” This condition is defined by a refractive error of –6 diopters or more and is projected to affect nearly one billion people by 2055. For patients with high myopia, the elongation of the eyeball leads to serious ocular complications, with one-third experiencing severe visual impairment. High myopia is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults, and currently, there is no effective treatment.

High myopia results in a thinner and weaker sclera—the white outer layer of the eye that maintains its shape. Progressive weakening and remodelling of the sclera drive the ocular complications that lead to blindness. To address this, our team is developing a therapy to fortify the weakened sclera. Our approach involves injecting a photosensitive crosslinker into the sclera and using light to initiate crosslinking through the pupil, thereby strengthening the sclera and preventing the progression of myopia.

We recently completed a proof-of-concept in vivo preclinical study that demonstrated the potential safety and efficacy of this approach. In collaboration with an industrial partner, we now aim to advance clinical translation by optimizing the treatment for human tissue. Additionally, we are investigating the underlying mechanisms, including transcriptomic, proteomic, and structural changes associated with the treatment’s effects.

The PhD candidate will develop research questions, design and perform experiments, analyze and interpret data, write papers for publication, and present findings both internally and at conferences. They will ultimately submit and defend a PhD thesis. Approximately 5% of their time will be dedicated to tutoring, teaching, or supervising students.

Requirements

Candidates should possess a master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., biomedical sciences, bioengineering, etc.) or have equivalent experience demonstrating an affinity for this topic, even if their educational background is in a different field. Candidates who have completed their bachelor’s degree in a country where it is common to directly enter a PhD programme (e.g., the USA) are welcome to apply without a master’s degree but must demonstrate substantial independent research experience.

We are seeking creative thinkers who are ready to tackle ambitious and highly challenging objectives. This project is ideal for a motivated candidate passionate about conducting translational research. Proficiency in scientific English for speaking, reading, and writing is required, but knowledge of Dutch is not necessary.

What we offer
As a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

• Good employment conditions. The position is graded according to UFO profile PhD, with corresponding salary from €2901,00 in the first year and €3707,00 gross per month in the fourth year (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
• An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 3 years will follow.

You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. • Opstellen van alle onderwijs- en examenroosters gebruikmakend van de systemen Syllabus+/TimeEdit, Timetable en SAP-SLM.
• Zorgen voor een efficiënte en effectieve inzet van onderwijsruimtes en -middelen.
• Oplossen van roosterconflicten en last-minute wijzigingen.
• Communicatie met relevante stakeholders zoals opleidingsdirecteuren, docenten, studenten en collega’s.
• Bijdragen aan de verbetering van planningsprocessen en -systemen. 
• Controleren van de onderwijsverrekening in het Collent systeem.
• Ondersteuning bij administratieve taken binnen het team studenten zaken (bijv. cursusinschrijvingen) en de academische adviseurs.

Functie-eisen
Je werkt gestructureerd, accuraat, zelfstandig en efficiënt. Daarnaast ben je analytisch en stressbestendig maar bovenal ben je vriendelijk naar onze studenten en medewerkers. Ook ben je flexibel in piekperioden.

Wat biedt de UM?
Als Onderwijsplanner bij Faculty of Science & Engineering kom je in dienst bij de meest internationale universiteit van Nederland in het prachtige Maastricht. Verder bieden wij je:

De functie is ingeschaald in schaal 8 conform UFO-profiel Medewerker studentenzaken met bijbehorende salarisinschaling op basis van ervaring tussen €3218,00 en €4298,00 bruto per maand (op basis van een fulltime dienstverband van 38 uur per week). • Bij de Universiteit Maastricht staat het welzijn van onze medewerkers hoog in het vaandel, zo hanteren we flexibele werktijden en de mogelijkheid om deels vanuit huis te werken indien de aard van je functie dit toelaat. Faculty of Science and Engineering
Bij de Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) richten we onze focus op thema's als circulariteit en duurzaamheid, future farming, de digitale wereld en de ontwikkeling van (wetenschappelijke) instrumenten. onze belangrijkste projecten, zoals de Einstein Telescope Pathfinder, springen direct in het oog. Het University College van de Universiteit Maastricht is een internationaal Liberal Arts and Sciences Honors College dat gespecialiseerd is in bacheloropleidingen voor ongeveer 800 academisch gepassioneerde en zeer gemotiveerde studenten met uiteenlopende achtergronden. Het bouwt voort op de sterke punten van de faculteiten van de Universiteit Maastricht en haar eigen kernpersoneel en biedt haar studenten bijna 200 cursussen en een uitgebreid vaardigheidstrainingsprogramma, evenals een hechte academische gemeenschap. Academische keuzevrijheid en persoonlijke aandacht zijn kenmerken van het programma.
